I'm actually I really happy to get one last game in against the 4th edition codex when I did. Conveniently enough my next game will be against Andy's 7th edition Orks so it will be a nice transition. Anyway, here is a quick run down of how the game went:
A big blob of Lootas, 2 Dakkajets, and a looted wagon with the str 8 gun (can't remember what its called)
The first shot fired in the game was my riptide shooting into his battlewagons, managed to get a pen and an explodes result which ended up killing almost half the boys inside. My ECPA riptide didn't do so hot however and failed his 2+ re-rollable gets hot roll to fire his ignores cover blast against the lootas, and unfortunately I didn't have an opportunity to shoot at them again. His first turn resulted in very little happening except him moving up his vehicles/ troops. Turn two was a pretty devastating turn for him, and I was beginning to think that perhaps the Ork codex was starting to show it's age. I managed to take out his battlewagon, half the troops inside, his trukk, and half the nobs. Things were looking pretty grim for him, but then his turn two turned things around in a big way. His dakkajets came on and did some serious damage, while each boy squad and the nob squad all managed to get off successful charges and wipe out their target, resulting in a dead riptide, a dead fusion drone, and my commander being wiped. From there I had to do everything I could not to let him get off any more charges. I Kited as much as possible while dodging loota shots and blasting apart his assault units.

He definitely turned the game around on me, if we would have gone on another turn I'm pretty sure he would have tabled me or won by a much wider margin.

Win loss record is now at:
5-4-0

As I stated, my next game will be a learning game against Andy's 7th edition orks. I'm very excited for this game. Since it is a learning game, I think I'm gonna bring either Chaos Marines or Daemons or both, just to get a variety and bring something that is a little more fun to play against. Expect the report on Sunday. Mister Discohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10540359309103919442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1301120587891109031.post-48836897623526465332014-06-25T18:05:00.001-07:002014-06-25T18:05:07.234-07:00Game 8: Rematchish

Things started off really bad for me with him scoring first blood and slay the warlord with the first shot(s) of the game w/ his exorcist. After that though I was able to turn things around and slowly chip away at him. I decided to reserve all of my suits and only deploy the marker squad, the skyray, and the riptides. I think this is going to be the key to winning with my list. I was able to keep him spread out and play a shock and awe style game (Hit him so hard that he can't retaliate) While keeping mobile and out of reach. I realize that my list is actually a little worse in Maelstrom missions than classic missions, my units lack the durability to stay out in the open to claim objectives so I often end up sacrificing units too quickly in maelstrom games. However, in this game I didn't have to worry about that and I was able to kite his units around much more effectively. This way I was able to just harass him and win the attrition game for once. (Usually I seem to struggle when it comes to attrition) We called the game when it went on past turn 5 because he wasn't going to be able to turn it around past that point.

I will point out that we made a play mistake that neither of us caught until later on that may have changed the outcome of the game substantially: He forgot/didn't know that move through cover effected charges and so didn't take it into account and failed a charge that he otherwise would have passed when his knight charged one of my riptides.

Anyway, as it stands the game was a win, the new WLD is:
5-3-0Mister Discohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10540359309103919442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1301120587891109031.post-30781986523769337732014-06-18T20:02:00.000-07:002014-06-18T20:02:05.330-07:00Game 7: The Iron Curtain

My main 40k army is Iron Curtain Necrons (a wraith star led by a destroyer lord, 3 ghost arks full of warriors, 3 annihilation barges) So it was nice to play against something similar especially since I haven't played my Necrons since 7th dropped.

Anyway, the game got off to a slow start for me and he got off to a head start, at one point leading the game by 6 points. His overlord tied up one of my riptides for most the game and the other one did some work but usually whiffed pretty hard for most of the game. The first half of the game was pretty low impact and first blood wasn't scored until the third turn. We ended up going to turn 6 I needed to score 4 points to tie the game and 5 points to win. Things were looking grim, until I rolled my objectives: 25, 34, and 14. He had objective 15 up too. The majority of my army was nearby those two objective markers and I was able to clear him off and score all 4 while getting line breaker. It was super close but I managed to pull it out.

A major lynchpin in the game was the Catacomb Command Barge, That thing is pretty nasty, he was able to mindshackle my riptide to prevent him from smashing it while his overlord proceeded to chip away at my riptide. I killed the command barge 3 times and it got up every time. Finally Brandon made a close shot with his monolith which just so happened to scatter and destroy the command barge, which then failed it's everliving roll.

I'm starting to refine my list a little bit, I don't think I will maintain this iteration for long. The Skyray did some decent work, it became a low priority target after it blew it's load, which allowed it to just kinda chill in the back field and play support.

The plasma commander attached to the two man plasma squad and they also managed to clean up a warrior squad. I'm not sure If I am going to keep them or not, it's a very expensive unit for what it does. Time will tell though.

Game result: Win

WLD: 4-3-0
Mister Discohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10540359309103919442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1301120587891109031.post-31080808160506122132014-06-14T20:20:00.003-07:002014-06-14T20:20:42.694-07:00Game 6: Sisters inbound

I took a gamble with the deployment of my Man-o-war stalkers and deployed them forward out of cover but had first turn so they were going to move into cover in a forward position... Unfortunately he seized, allowing him to open up on them first turn and score first blood. I did fight back for most of the game and we were neck and neck for most of it, but I simply lost the war of attrition so he had more scoring units on the table towards the end of the game allowing him to claim more of the all important late game objectives. Both of my riptides survived, but one was tied up in combat with celestine. and you can only do so much with a single riptide jumping around. I called the game after we rolled for it to continue past 5.

At the onset of 7th edition, it was my intention to try out lots of different lists so I could get a feel for the edition. With that in mind, I decided that my game logs would just give you a brief description of whatever list I would be playing so I could churn out game reports without getting bogged down in the details (which is why I ended up burning out on game logs last edition). Welp, it turns out that with Feast of Blades Qualifier, OFCC and The Harvester coming up this year I am going to be needing a lot of practice with my tournament list, which just so happens to be my Tau, so the vast majority of my games will be at least some variation on this list. So for the sake of completeness I decided I would do a quick write up and explanation of what I have taken and why I took it.

I also, figured I would give a little explanation as to what the idea behind the army is. This army was designed to be a very visually unique army on the table, instead of crisis suits I have decided to do a few conversions to set the army apart from other armies out there. Every crisis suit in my army is represented by what I call a Man-o-war drone which is just a conversion based off of the recon drone model from the pathfinder kit. The commanders will be what I call Angelfish command drones. I'm still debating on the inclusion of broadsides in the final list, but if I do, they too will be drones. I will admit I may have dropped the ball a little bit on the riptides who are mostly just out of the box models but I plan on them being heavily battle-damaged to represent that they are of the few remaining living fire-caste soldiers left on the planet, which is an earth caste manufacturing planet where technology at present is available in much larger numbers than soldiers. Below is a picture of an angelfish, escorted by 2 observation drones (counts as markerlight drones but modeled different to represent that they are attached to the angelfish) joined to a unit of 4 markerlight drones. In the midground is a unit of 3 Man-o-war stalker drones (Crisis suit w/ 2 missile pods) and in the far back is a man-o-war demolition drone (Crisis suit w/ 2 fusion guns)
Anyway, now that you have an idea of what the army looks like, here is a look at the present 1500 list that I have been playtesting:

Codex: Farsight Enclaves 1500pts

HQ:
2x XV8 Commanders (Angelfish Command Drone)
-2x missile pods
+Target lock
+Drone Controller
+2 Marker Drones

TROOPS:
(all of the following models have bonding knives as required by Codex: Farsight Enclaves)
3-man crisis suit team (Man-O-War Stalker Drones)
2x missile pods each

3-man crisis suit team (Man-O-War Suppression Drones)
2x burst cannons each
2x Gun drones each
+Advanced targeting system on each crisis suit in the unit

2-man crisis suit team (Man-O-War Hunter Drones)
2x Plasma Rifles each

3 single-man cisis suit teams (Man-O-War Demolition Drones)
2x Fusion Guns each

ELITE:
Riptide:
+Ion accelerator
+Twin-linked fusion gun
+Early warning Override
+Velocity Tracker
+Earth-caste piloting array

Riptide:
+Ion accelerator
+Twin-linked fusion gun
+Early warning Override
+Velocity Tracker

FAST:
2x 4-man units of markerlight drones

A quick explanation:
This army is all about putting firepower where you need it, when you need it.

Typically I deploy both of the commanders each attached to a marker light drone squad, both riptides, and the missile suits, then I deepstrike the three solo fusion suits, the 2-man plasma squad and the burst cannon squads.

I use my long range firepower to chip away at the enemy and take out whatever targets present themselves as well as set up targets for my reserves. Once reserves start arriving I use them to take out their respective target of choice/ claim objectives. This list is all about being flexible, putting units where you need them when you need them.

There are a few drawbacks, however, due to being such a small elite force. First and foremost this list has got nothing going for it in the psychic or assault phases. Str 5 T4 troops aren't horrible, but I'm under no illusion that they have any business being in combat. Next up, my anti-infantry is lacking at best. The burst cannon unit can do some serious damage, but they are hindered pretty bad by their 18 inch range. Finally, the warlord is very vulnerable being in a unit of only 7 models at toughness 4, only having a 3+ save and that unit being a very high priority for my opponent to take out.

Despit all this though, I think the basic list idea does have potential, I just need to work on boosting up my anti-infantry and better utilizing terrain to keep my commander safe.

Expanding it to 1750 and beyond I am either going to include broadsides or increase the number of crisis suits I bring to the table for more resilient mobile troops. Also, I am looking at bringing skyrays as my anti-air and shifting my riptide's roles to be more surviveable anti-infantry/ anti-vehicle units.

Mister Discohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10540359309103919442noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1301120587891109031.post-29976520877269325342014-06-11T11:04:00.002-07:002014-06-11T12:14:02.356-07:00Game 5: Beast Mode

I solicited Kriston for a pick up game this past tuesday for a rematch of our last game. This was my first mistake. Here's the lowdown on how it all played out:

Game 5: Farsight vs. Beaststar, 1500 points
Opponent: Kriston
My list: Farsight tau featuring MSU crisis suits w/ 2 riptides and 2 drone commanders w/ markerlight drones
His list: Beast star: 1 fully beefed out Dark eldar beast unit led by the Baron and a farseer on bike, a unit of 20 guardians led by a warlock and Eldrad, a wraithknight, 2 3-man units of jetbikes, 2 5-man units of dark eldar warriors
Mission: Spoils of war (Maelstrom Mission 3)
Notes on the game: This was an intense game. Beast star is a pretty damn strong list and Kriston has a proven track record with it in 6th. This was his first time bringing it out for a test run in 7th. It's funny, despite how experienced both Kriston and I are at playing 40k, and how famililar we are with our lists, we continue to have very long games for some reason. This one lasted 4 hours.
Anyway, my game plan going in was to spread out as much as possible to make it so his beast squad could only ever eat one unit a turn. This worked for the most part, but unfortunately he excels at making sure he limits the number of attacks he gets in an assault phase so more often than not his beast squad would be locked in combat preventing me from being able to shoot it. Which is ok, I was able to commit my firepower elsewhere. It took me a little longer to bring down his Wraithknight than I would have liked, which set me back a fair bit in the grand scheme of things. In the end, it came down to the fact that I was sacrificing my units to his beast squad faster than I could kill his units and the game ended with me only ending up being to kill the Wraithknight, the farseer, and a unit of jetbikes. Despite that, however, the game was decided by linebreaker and the final score was 9 victory points to 10.

There were two major play mistakes to highlight in this game that could have drastically changed the outcome, I would be remiss not to mention them.

The first was when he had a unit of dark eldar warriors sitting inside ruins on a level 3" above ground. and I had a unit of 2 crisis suits firing upon them from outside the ruins. I was unable to take out the warriors by shooting and got greedy and chose to charge the warriors with my crisis suits in the hopes of wiping them out in close combat and claiming the objective that turn, instead of just boosting underneath them and contesting the objective for a turn safely behind a wall until the following turn when I could hop up and shoot/ charge them with much better odds of wiping them out. Unfortunately I failed my charge leaving my crisis suits right out in the open and they got obliterated by his firepower in the following turn and he was able to score the objective with no resistance.

The second play mistake was on his side, he had split off eldrad in an attempt to score every objective for the tactical mission card in his hand that granted him d3+3 points if he held everything. In order to achieve this mission he simply had to kill one of my crisis suits which was holding the objective in question. I like to think I psyked him out by telling him that I was going to kill eldrad in overwatch with my fusion gun but, whatever the reason, instead of just charging my crisis suit he decided to cast mindwar on him first. The cast was succesful but I rolled a 14 for my leadership value and Eldrad rolled an 11, resulting in Eldrad losing the mindwar and reducing his WS and BS to 1. This resulted in him failing to kill my crisis suit that turn and ultimately cost him having a decisive victory instead of a close one.

In the end, it was a great game, I always enjoy being challenged by Kriston and I look forward to becoming more skilled in this edition so I can actually beat the fucker for once.

This loss leaves my current W-L-D ratio at 3-2-0, at least I'm positive, right?Mister Discohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10540359309103919442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1301120587891109031.post-38477894025193152012014-06-06T00:56:00.002-07:002014-06-11T12:12:50.608-07:007th edition, games 3 and 4

Another thursday, 2 more games of 40k. I'm still working on getting my fundamentals down so I decided to bring the same list I did last week. Anyway, here is the quick rundown of how they went.

Game 3: Farsight vs. Dark Angels, 1500 points
Opponent: Sean
My list: Farsight tau featuring MSU crisis suits w/ 2 riptides and 2 drone commanders w/ markerlight drones
His list: Plasma for days. 2 devastator squads w/ plasma cannons, a unit of black knights, Ezekial, a librarian on bike, some scouts, some tactical squads. 9 plasma cannons total
Mission: Tactical Escalation
Notes on the game: I managed to get first turn and the deployment was hammer and anvil so I had a massive advantage. I eliminated all of his plasma cannons before a single one could shoot and used my superior range to my advantage for the entire game. I was able to mitigate the effectiveness of his black knights for the majority of the game. The game was still relatively close towards the end with him slowly chipping away at my army. I decided to try a new strategy since the advent of 7th, I purposefully whittled down his units to just a small handful of guys without wiping them out. That way, once I drew a mission card that required wiping out units I could do so with ease... I just so happened to draw 2 different variants of that mission on the same turn late game that catapulted my score up past the point where he could catch me, thus allowing me to win decisively.

Opponent: Kyle
My list: Farsight tau featuring MSU crisis suits w/ 2 riptides and 2 drone commanders w/ markerlight drones.
Sean's list: Ezekial leading a unit of deathwing terminators. 2 land raiders, 2 predators, 2 5-man scout squads
Kyle's list: Puppies + Tau + Legion of the damned: 2 units of legion of the damned, bjorn in a drop pod, grey hunters in a landraider, long fangs, grey hunters in a drop pod, wolf guard terminators in a drop pod, aegis line w/ comms relay, 10 pathfinders, 10 fire warriors, cadre fireblade, riptide, hammerhead
Mission: Cleanse and Control (Maelstrom #1)
Notes on the game: We decided to play a 3000 point game for the hell of it, Sean and I teaming up against Kyle. It was a very long very bloody game and Kyle held the lead for the vast majority of it. In the end we won the war of attrition, slowly pushing Kyle back into his corner allowing Sean and I to spread out and start collecting objectives. My warlord trait (+1 vp if my warlord is the one capping an objective for the 1,2,3-x missions) was largely responsible for us pulling out the victory in the end. A very close game all things considered.

At the end of game 4 my 7th edition Win/Loss/Draw ratio is 3-1-0 Not a bad way to start, let's hope I can keep this up. Mister Discohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10540359309103919442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1301120587891109031.post-29458369323569146012014-05-29T23:47:00.001-07:002014-06-11T12:13:01.181-07:00Reviving the Game Log.

So, it's been a LONG time since the last time I posted here, But since it's a new edition I figure now is as good of time as any. This won't be the same as it was before, more of just a place where I can quickly jot down notes about my games so I can keep track of them again and keep an eye on my W/L/D ratios and whatnot.

Anyway, I got my first two games of 7th in today. The first was against my old protege Dane and the other against my classic buddy Kriston. Here's a quick rundown of how they went.

Game 1: Farsight vs. Orks, 1500 points
Opponent: Dane
My list: Farsight tau featuring MSU crisis suits w/ 2 riptides and 2 drone commanders w/ markerlight drones
His list: Mix'n'match orks. 2 mobs of boyz, a unit of nob bikers, a looted wagon, a deff dread, a dakkajet, 15 lootas
Mission: Cleanse and control (Maelstrom #1)
Notes on the game: My tau are a more tournament minded list, whereas Dane's orks were a list that he came up with on the spot. I managed to get some lucky rolls early and knock out his Nob bikers 1st turn. I got lucky with my mission draws and was up to 11 or so points by the end of the 4th turn. I was able to kite most of his forces most of the game while continuously taking chunks out of the mobs w/ my riptides. Game ended early in my favor.

Game 2: Farsight vs. Eldar, 1500 points
Opponent: Kriston
My list: Farsight tau featuring MSU crisis suits w/ 2 riptides and 2 drone commanders w/ markerlight drones
His list: Eldar goodstuff: 20 man squad of gaurdians behind an adl, 2 10 man squads of avengers in serpents, a nightspinner, a wraithknight, eldrad and a spiritseer.
Mission: Deadlock (Maelstrom #6)
Notes on the game: Both of us started out with subpar missions right off the bat and managed to stay roughly equal in points for most of the game. I went first and managed to nearly wipe out Eldrad's unit right off the bat, killing 18 out of the 20 gaurdians before Eldrad could put up shrouding and invisibility. From there the game was pretty damn bloody. By turn 5 he was down to just eldrad hiding safely in a ruin, his wraithknight, and a unit of dire avengers, whereas I was left with A drone commander, my warlord drone commander, and a single double fusion crisis suit. The game was decided when he sniped out my warlord with his wraithknight to secure victory w/ slay the warlord. A rematch is definitely needed.

Thoughts after the first two games:
Invisibility is pretty gross, tough to deal with, especially when combined w/ shrouding.
My tau seem to have fared the transition to 7th pretty well. Having 5 units that deep strike can be extremely handy for claiming Tactical objectives through the game.
On the topic of tactical objectives, I really like this change. It completely changes the feel of 40k and makes the game feel a lot more dynamic and fun. I can definitely see it being a little on the unbalanced side, but it should be relatively easy to clean up for tournament use.Mister Discohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10540359309103919442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1301120587891109031.post-80686665712764679922012-09-16T04:53:00.003-07:002012-09-16T04:57:34.001-07:00List Update: 1850 GT Final

At the end of October Gamer's Haven is hosting their GT and I am fully prepared to do my best at not sucking at this thing. It's one thing to win a 20 man tournament, it's an entirely different thing to win a 60 man tournament. I've decided to lock in my list early and play test the ever living shit out of it to ensure that my only excuses for losing at the tournament is bad dice/ no sleep/ the sun in my eyes/ society/ how broke the Chaos Marine codex is/ that I stubbed my toe. Not to mention the need to be fully painted before the tournament so I can maybe actually get some sleep for once before the tournament instead of painting all night... A novel concept I know. Anyway here is the list I am planning on bringing:

Breakdown:

HQ:

Destroyer lords are my personal favorite HQ choice for Necrons in 6th edition, as time goes on I'm really beginning to see royal courts as more of a point sink than anything. Sure they add utility, and the lack of lanceteks can really be felt but the cost of adding them is too great in my eyes. The Destroyer Lords serve my army in an entirely different capacity. They act as force multipliers, usually leading my wraiths from the front and acting as a tank until the unit makes it's way into close combat. Once they are locked in to combat they provide preferred enemy to the wraiths, greatly increasing their combat ability. They also are able to peel off annoying fist sergeants win hand over hand to ap3 characters and generally do a pretty good job at keeping the heavy hitters at bay. They are more of a finesse HQ that requires that you cherry pick their roles on a combat by combat basis. Against other Necron HQs they generally go down pretty hard, as well as against most monstrous creatures. They are not the super combat beast that a lot of players seem to think they are.

TROOPS:

I'm only bringing 4 troop choices, which is a bit less than I'd like to bring but overall I think they are durable enough that I dont need to worry too much about their performance. I'm bringing the Warriors in Ghost arks primarily as mobile scoring units/ anti-heavy armor. The tesla immortals and foot warriors can be used flexibly I can place either or both inside the bastion depending on my opponent's army build. Either way the foot units are my designated backfield protectors, if the mission calls for it I can utilize the tesla immortals as additional midfield support.

FAST:

Wraiths... Are amazing. They are the army's problem solvers. Against an assault centered enemy they can be used as backfield countercharge specialists. They can also be used as hunter-killers, sneaking through terrain towards the enemy backfield in order to shut down enemy fire support (broadsides, longfangs, devastators) or to contest enemy objectives. More often than not their primary use is as interceptor missiles, moving in and tying up enemy deathstars for the majority of the game. In this role they are very reliant on the Destroyer lord providing them preferred enemy so they can whittle down enemy numbers enough to survive multiple turns. Typically against enemy deathstars they are hitting on a 4+, the extra 8% chance to hit the D-lord provides on top of the extra chance at wounding/ rending can really push their output damage over the top.

A common misconception is that the Wraiths are the core of my army and that I am relying on them to wade through and shut down the enemy army single-handedly. This often means that my opponents over-prioritize them. This usually works pretty well into my strategy, a Wraithstar is far more of an defensive than an offensive unit their goal is to draw enemy resources into dealing with them so that the rest of my army can accomplish their mission.
HEAVY:

Annihilation barges are one of my favorite vehicles in the game they are capable of producing some pretty incredible number when firing, they are extremely flexible, capable of handling anti-air, anti-transport, and anti-infantry all at a relatively even level of productiveness. Throw that on top of them being tough as nails and you've got a winning combination. I think many people underestimate just how good their flexibility is, unlike a night/doom scythe they can have 100% uptime during the entire game (able to fire at their optimal target) they can sit still and unload on a target if they find good cover/ dont need cover, they can move 6" and shoot at nearly full capacity if they are pursuing a ground target. They can move 12" and shoot at reduced capacity if they need to catch a unit that is further out. And most importantly is that they are great anti-air defense. They can always move 12" and still reach full anti-air firing capacity allowing them to almost always be in position to shut down flyers wherever they may pop up. And best of all if your playing against an air-force list you can flat out an annihilation barge in order to put them in defensive mode and ensure their surviveability against an oncoming flyer onslaught, all while moving them 18" to ensure that they are in position to catch enemy flyers wherever they end up coming in.

FORT:

Finally we come to the Bastion. As good as Annihilation barges are you can unfortunately only take 3 in a single force org chart and against a flyer spam list usually they aren't enough to take out all of the flyers themselves, that's where the bastion comes in. In most other armies I personally would suggest aegis lines instead of bastions, however, since this army has armour saturation on av13+ the bastion is actually a force multiplier, requiring that my opponent commit the same kind of weaponry that is effective against my vehicles to the bastion if they want to deal with it... Which effectively increases the surviveabilty of my vehicles. Now if I could take another Annihilation barge in place of a bastion, you best believe I would, however I take what I can get and I'm happy with it. (Also it keeps my army from being completely overtly spammalicious)

Final Words

The two main themes I followed in the construction of this list were flexibility and durability. With 6 AV13+ models, and two units of what are effectively 2+/3++ (due to LoS!) marines with two wounds and jump packs this army isn't easy to remove from the board. The true beauty of the list comes from the fact that the current local metagame is heavily favoring mass Str6-8 fire to be used as anti-air weaponry... Which happens to be exactly the wrong kind of weapon you want to bring to bear against this list. It may lack the straight up fire power that other armies pack but I believe it's durability and ability to focus fire can win the day.

His list: Double Wraithstar: He sprang for orbs on both of his destroyer lords and an arrow on one. Ran 6 man units of wraiths, 2 units of 6 warriors in scythes, one unit of 6 immortals in a scythe, and one unit of 5 immortals on foot. 1 annihilation barge, 2 doom scythes, and an aegis line with comms relay.

Mission: Big guns never tire, dawn of war deployment. Modified: if you end a player turn holding an uncontested objective you count as holding it even if you move away until an enemy seizes it for themselves

Highlights: This was a quick and dirty game, we spent the early turns dancing our wraiths around eachother to avoid giving the other person the charge. Eventually I sacrificed a unit of immortals to get his wraiths where I wanted them so I could take them out with mine. All the while I was sneaking around and sniping off wraiths from his unit denying his destroyer lord the chance to tank. I think the deciding factor to this game was that I am a fair bit more experienced with wraiths than my opponent. I claimed my back field objectives early and moved my annihilation barges to his back lines and claimed his backfield objectives too, requiring that if he had any chance of winning he would have to split his forces amongst the two fronts. He could have done it but it certainly would have been an uphill battle with time not on his side. We called it early, my victory.

MVP Moment: I committed early on to cripple his wraiths and I made sure and positioned myself properly to snipe around the destroyer lord. I cleared out all of the wraiths of one unit with shooting and was able to bait his other unit it with my immortals allowing me to get a countercharge with my wraiths. With both of his units wiped out and mine still up I then had the upper hand and was going to be able to do some serious damage to the remainder of his forces with little on his end that he could do to stop me.
Result: Decisive victory, WLD record: 17-8-2.

The table is split into four diagonal quadrants, you roll a d6 for each of your units to determine which quadrant it will deploy in. on a 5-6 you choose your quadrant.

Highlights: I don't know what Steve was thinking with this mission... It is by far the most unbalanced mission I have ever played. one of my wraithwings began the game an inch away from his motercade, the other began the game in posession of the relic due to my warlord getting the scoring trait. I was so mentally off put by the mission I was not playing well at all however. He seized and was able to alpha strike the wraithstar next to his motorcade into oblivion before they could charge. I deployed all of my units towards the middle of the board in an attempt to keep him away from the relic... not thinking about the fact that it allowed to focus his entire army on pushing towards the middle and cutting me down, while I was completely surrounded. and had difficulty getting the fuck out of there. The deployment was so time consuming that we only ended up making it to turn 3 with him getting first blood both of us getting slay the warlord and line breaker and no one claiming the objective since he killed my destroyer lord.

My list: Double Wraithstar redux: Add unit of 5 gauss immortals, bastion w/ quad-gun, beef out the warrior squads in the arks to 10 man, drop the nightscythe.

His list: Space wolves w/ Space marine allies: 2 units of longfangs, wolf lord, wolf priest, and captain leading a thunderwolf squad. 2 units of space marine bikes two units of grey hunters in drop pods.

Mission: 3 objectives, hammer and anvil deployment.

Highlights: Very simple mission, game started in my favor I had two objectives in my deployment zone to his one. He dropped in the grey hunters right in front of my two annihilation barges, tesla immortals, and wraithstar. I obliterated one, and destroyed most of the other. His bike squads also helped him run up my flank and took out an annihilation barge. I commited half my firepower towards taking down his thunderstar, killing all but his warlord. For some reason this game just flew by and we didn't get a time warning. I was unprepared for the game to end and since he went second he was able to claim my objective on turn three without me being able to stop him. He won uncontested despite the fact if the game had gone to full turn I would have easily destroyed most if not all of his army.

MVP Moment: Time getting called in his turn without a time warning before hand allowed him to easily skate to victory.
Result: WTF loss, WLD record: 17-10-2.

End of the day... The tournament didn't go anywhere near the way I had hoped it would. 1 win to 2 losses. Oh well... It's not a huge deal, There is a doubles tournament at Gamer's Haven next weekend that I am really looking forward to. I'll have a list posted up between then and now, and another game report before too long as well (I've already played the game, just need to write up the report). Anyway thats it for now, stay tuned for more.

This weekend was the first fully 6th edition tournament at Gamer's Haven, and boy howdy was it fun. There was a pretty decent turnout considering the low numbers that we've been seeing as a result of people still learning 6th. There was a field of 22 players, and surprisingly enough, not a single person brought Grey Knights. Anyway the dice were on my side and I managed to do quite good (taking best general). Here's the story of how it all went down for me...

Game 24

Opponent: Tony, a player from the old school of 40k thinking, he fought me on so many rules it wasn't funny. This is one of those games where you have to force yourself to be nice to your opponent and not take pleasure in crushing them.

My list: Double Wraithstar

His list: Dark Angels: Librarian in power armor and belial leading a fist + bolter deathwing squad w/ cml. Deathwing assault squad w/ all the cc gubbins, double plasma tac squad, lasplas tac squad in a rhino, double melta tac squad in a pod, ravenwing attack squadron w/ multi-melta attack bike. Whirlwind, Vindicator.

Mission: Endless Crusade: 5 mysterious objectives, basic book secondaries. Vanguard deployment

Highlights: It was obvious just from looking at my opponents list that he is from the old school 40k community and that his list was built for a more fluffy game and less than optimized for tournament play. This led to some problems later on in the game, as we were both approaching the game from different mindsets. I took first turn and sent one wraithwing after belial's squad on my right flank and the other towards my left in a pincer formation. I also moved the Annihilation barges up midfield (making sure to stay out of range of the vindi) while shelling up in a corner with the majority of my troops waiting for his reserves. The annihilation squad chewed up belial's unit fairly well and I moved in the wraithwing to finish them off on turn 2. My warriors were hiding very close to the corner and blocked in by the ghost arks so I thought for sure that they were relatively safe... but on turn one he deepstruck his Deathwing assault squad in right behind them in the ballsiest deep strike I've ever seen. If he had scattered at all he probably would have mishapped. That deepstrike pretty much forced me to split my forces between dealing with the terminator squad (killing all but one dual lightning clawed termy) and the rest of his army. On his second turn his drop pod also came in to put pressure on my backfield but by then his terminator threat was manageable and I was able to commit my arks to clearing out the drop pod. In the end it came down to him not committing enough to taking out my back field and my forward assault forces pincering in his units and working their way in towards his mid board taking out a unit a turn through the one-two punch of softening units up with Annihilation barges and assaulting them with wraiths afterward. The game ended with him only having that single assault terminator on the board and me controlling 2 of the objectives.

MVP Moment: That deepstrike into my back field was the ballsiest move I've seen in a while, it would have paid off too if he had planned a little bit more ahead and put some pressure on my backfield so my warriors couldn't just light up the terminators... Here's a quick snapshot I took of the deepstrike just so I could show it here:
Result: Decisive victory, WLD record: 14-8-2. Tournament WLD: 1-0-0

Game 25

Opponent: Dane Lindh, he is an up and coming player in the area who I have a lot of respect for. I see great things in his future as far as 40k is concerned.

My list: Double Wraithstar

His list: Ork Rush: 10 Nobs w/ 7 big choppas, 2 Klaws, bosspole, banner, eavy armor, cybork bodies, pain boy. Led by Zogwart and a klaw warboss, all stuffed into a rolla wagon. Two units of 30 slugga boyz each w/ klaw nob, 5 deffkoptas w/ tl rokkit launcha, 15 man loota squad. And a looted wagon w/ boom gun just for good measure.

Mission: Seek and Destroy: Kill points with three objectives, each worth 1kp. Hammer and Anvil deployment.

Highlights: I came really close to losing this one. I moved my wraithwings up together in a way that was too aggressive and I positioned them in a way where I would for sure get the turn 2 charge... as long as he didn't get the long charge off... which he did... And it hurt. He dispatched both wraithwings easily by the end of turn two and left me backpedaling all game. I used a denied flank strategy which effectively kept his second 30 boy squad out of the game while I whittled them down with the Tesla immortals all game. He was winning up until the last turn of the game when I somehow managed to get all of his units out of combat and have them be completely exposed to being fired down. I went from being down 4 kill points to being up 2 all in that last turn.

MVP Moment: My positioning with my wraiths was a huge play mistake, I should have never banked on him failing the long charge without any way of punishing him for failing it. It nearly cost me the game and I had to work my ass off for the entire game to rectify it.

Result: VERY close win, WLD record: 15-8-2.Tournament WLD: 2-0-0

Game 26

Opponent: Alex, the guy who's Dreadknight absolutely obliterated me in game 21

My list: Double Wraithstar

His list: Space wolves w/ Space Marine allies: I wasn't able to get a copy of his list so I'm doing this from memory but what I remember of it is: Thunderwolf cav unit w/ all the fixings. Led by a rune priest w/ jaws and hurricane, wolf lord, and Space Marine Captain on bike. Two squads of double melta grey hunters in pods, two units of long fangs, one manning a quad gun Aegis defense line, one w/ a pod (which drops empty on turn two so both units of grey hunters come in turn one), a space marine bike squad, and an asslas stormtalon.

Mission: Transmission received: This is a cool hybrid mission where you play both The Relic and Emperors will, resulting in 3 objectives each worth three vps, the two in the players deployment zones are regular mysterious, while the middle one is a relic. The secondaries are slightly different too, they were linebreaker, slay the warlord, and 'transmit data' which was to control the relic and have it within 3" of either player's objective at the end of the game.

Highlights: Alex is quickly becoming one of my favorite people to play. He is an excellent painter, and a very strong player if not a little inexperienced. The game went fairly quickly, I used one wraithwing to intercept his thundercav squad while I sent the other around to his backfield to take out the longfangs and move him off his objective. He dropped the grey hunters off on my left flank near my interceptor wraiths in an attempt to bolter them down before they could catch his thundercav, but they failed their mission and the interception went off as planned. The wraithwing took out all but the wolf lord and captain who were each reduced to one wound before the wraiths were wiped out. The destroyer lord managed to get up and take out one of the grey hunters squads solo while my warriors finished the other. The true surprise of the game came when he went to charge my warrior squad with the remaining characters of the thundercav. By some miracle of the dice my 8 man warrior squad managed to score two wounds with overwatch... which he failed, killing both special characters (each of which had a 2+ save). The game ended with his bike squad grabbing the relic and making a break for it as my hunter-killer wraith squad managed to finish the longfangs, leaving them wide open to be taken out, meanwhile my immortals flew in and claimed his objective, while my warriors held mine.

MVP Moment: After rolling my overwatch with my warrior squad against his two thundercav special characters I joked with Alex that he was gonna roll snake eyes for his saves... Which he then immediately did. I felt like the biggest douche in the world when it happened and that moment allowed my warrior squad to become a serious thorn in his side for the rest of his game.
Result: Decisive victory, WLD record: 16-8-2. Tournament WLD: 3-0-0

At the end of the day it came down to just me and Kriston Broxson as the only undefeated players (both of us playing Necrons) The tiebreaker was sportsmanship which I somehow edged out the lead on, allowing me to take best general for the tournament. Overall it was a great day and I am most certainly looking forward to the GT Gamer's Haven is hosting in October. Here's hoping for a repeat performance!

My list: Double Wraithstar

Her list: Tyranid Nomforce: Flyrant, Tervigon with all the gubbins, 6 deathspitter warriors w/ 1 barbed strangler, 30 hormagaunts with toxin sacs, doom in a pod, 3 zoanthropes in a pod, 3 hive guard, 2 trygons with Regen

Mission: Purge the Alien, Hammer and Anvil deployment

Highlights: Rachel's dice hated her from the get go on this game, the very first die roll of the game was her rolling only a 5 for her gaunt spawning, which happened to neuter her tervigon, her shooting for her first turn also failed to even wound a single model. The very first die roll I made for the game was shooting an Annihilation barge at her Flyrant in hopes of grounding it so I could charge into it with my wraithstar, that didn't happen... Instead I managed 3 hits, followed by 3 wounds (needing 5s due to iron arm) 3 failed armour saves, and finally a failed grounding test that resulted in a dead flyrant. For some reason flyrants have a tendency to die gloriously against me... Turn two saw her zoanthropes and doom hopped in and shot up both wraith squads fairly good, none of the wraiths died but most of them were down to one wound thanks to look out sir! shenanigans. My turn saw me killing the 5-man gaunt squad and the doom with shooting, followed by the Tervigon and the zoanthropes dying to wraithstar assaults. Both of her Trygons and her 30 bug Hormagaunt squads made it into combat with my wraithstars on turn 3, I managed to kill one Trygon and get the other down to one wound in the resulting combats but lost one of my wraithstars in the process. I dealt some dakka out on my turn, killing two of the Hive guards and wounding some warriors. Unfortunately we had to call the game early since we spent so much time screwing around and socializing with the other people playing at the Haven and I had to leave for work, the game ended with me up a few victory points and her being a turn out of charge range with her units, having to face all of my shooting units except an Annihilation barge before she got there it was pretty clear that if things went on she would be fighting an uphill battle.

MVP Moment: The downing of the Flyrant turn one was a huge swing in my favor, and resulted in the following face from Rachel:

I always enjoy games against Rachel even if we always seem to go to time, I hope to play her at the tournament this weekend! Speaking of which expect my Tournament report Saturday Night/ Sunday afternoon, we should have a really good turnout for it. The Gamer's Haven sold 147 6th edition rule books, which is the highest of any store without an online market in the entire United States, which is pretty damn awesome. They can definitely bring the numbers!

I keep running into the problem of having my wraithstar die on me early in the game, leaving myself defenseless against late game assaults. Instead of learning to be more conservative with my wraithstar like a smart player should... I decided to go ahead and double down on my investment. Since I have an 1850 point tournament coming up at Gamer's Haven this weekend I decided that it would be a perfect time to experiment with the double Wraithstar. Read on to find out how the list breaks down:
Why?

The Premise of this list is pretty simple. It's essentially just pushing my basic list to a new extreme and moving it into a much more assault heavy list. Every list I write begins with taking three Annihilation Barges, they are my bread and butter units and the best land to air choice in terms of flexibility and mobility. Next up we've got the wraith units, I've found that I typically want 3 whipcoils in each of my units, I buy particle casters as needed to spend the last few point I have left over. Since I have a second unit of wraiths I want a second destroyer lord to lead them since he is an amazing force multiplier, he acts as a great tank as I position the wraiths in to get into close combat, and once they are there he adds a huge boost to their offensive power by providing preferred enemy. Finally we come to troops, the units of warriors in arks are there because they are very tough to bring down and they help take some anti-tank heat off the Annihilation barges. Next we have the Tesla immortals in a scythe, the scythe is here for anti air and so I can get a troop unit onto the other side of the board in a hurry if I need to play more aggressively. Honestly I would prefer to bring a bastion for anti air due to armor saturation, every strength 6 gun is going to be pointing at my scythe the second it comes on the board and I really don't expect it to survive it's first turn. A bastion on the other hand would be my 6th AV 13+ unit and would cause my opponent to redirect even more heavy firepower away from my other, more important units. Alas, I won't have time to purchase, and convert a monolith to become a bastion before the tournament but I most certainly plan on picking one up before the next big function. Finally we have the foot warriors. The way the points worked out I just couldn't squeeze in a transport for them, I feel they are the weakest link in my army, and in a perfect world this would be the unit manning the bastion. As it stands they are gonna be my go to objective camping unit, and the hope is that they will draw just a little bit of firepower away from the wraiths, which I will be able to easily recoup whatever losses I may face via ghost ark reanimation.Mister Discohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10540359309103919442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1301120587891109031.post-86701857799756596032012-08-22T04:00:00.001-07:002012-08-22T04:00:17.660-07:00Game Reports 21-22: I am Disappoint

This weekend I attended a small tournament at Merlyns with relatively poor turnout (5 players) So instead of doing a full tournament report I decided to just do a quick report on the two games I did play (I had a second round bye unfortunately)

Game 21

Opponent: Alex

My list: Mechrons 1250

His list: Grey Knights airstrike: Inquisitor w/ prescience leading a 5 man terminator squad in a storm raven, 10 man strike squad with 2x psycannons combat squadded, one in a psyback the other in a storm raven. Dreadknight with incinerator, dreadfist.

Mission: Modified Scouring, dawn of war deployment. Each player placed three objectives valuing 1 2 and 3 victory points, they knew the value of each objective they placed but not of the objectives their opponents placed. Slay the warlord was worth 2 vps instead of the normal 1.

Highlights: This game was somewhat frustrating. It began with me moving my wraithstar forward in an attempt to knock out his 5 man strike squad/ psyback early. In response he moved his dreadknight over to intercept, normally this isn't a problem but my dice weren't with me early on and I lost 3 wraiths rather quickly and the dreadknight was able to insta-kill two more once they got into melee before finally knocking out the d.lord. This put me on the back foot early on and I fought tooth and nail to try and regain the upperhand all game. I got some good luck back when I took out the storm raven that was carrying on the second half of the strike squad, killing the strike squad to the man in the resulting crash. However despite me committing most of my army towards shooting down the dreadknight throughout the game it managed to sweep across my board, with near impunity, killing an annihilation barge, a ghost ark, a unit of warriors and finally moving to contest my number 3 objective. He figured out that it was my 3 objective by calling my bluff due to the fact that I was hovering over my 2 objective but staying near to the 3 all game. I managed to down the other stormraven and kill most of the terminator squad inside, but unfortunately he retreated the terminators back towards his own 3 objective. The final turn came down to me trying to knock the final wound off the dreadknight for the win, I shot at it with 2 annihilation barges, one ghost ark, 10 immortals, and 8 warriors but was unable to deal the killing blow, resulting in him contesting my 3 and managing to claim his own 3 and his own 2.

MVP Moment: The dreadknight singlehandedly won his game. Every single kill he made this game was made through his dreadknight. If I had managed to kill it on the final turn I would have ended up winning the game.

Result: Close loss, WLD record: 12-7-2.

With that loss, my hopes of walking out of this tournament a winner withered to nothingness, I was very disappointed to be down and out... Then I was told I had a bye and my tournament was kinda ruined at that point.

Game 22

Opponent: Kriston Broxson

My list: Mechrons 1250

His list: Necron Air support: Orikan the diviner, 3 units of 10 immortals in nightscythes, 3 tomb spyders, 8 scarabs.

Mission: Endless War, Kill Points, vanguard strike deployment. Endless war is a format that the TO at Merlyns has been running for years. Every non-vehicle unit gains the Without Number rule from the 4th edition Tyranid codex, meaning that as soon as the entire unit is killed it is immediately placed in reserve. It's purpose is to discourage fully mechanized armies and provide an interesting strategic twist.

Highlights: What an interesting game. I attempted to alpha strike the scarab squad in order to force him to miss a turn of spawning early on with the spyders while also keeping the scarabs from eating my vehicles too early. Unfortunately I whiffed on two of my annihilation barge rounds and was unable to take them out, allowing him to counterstrike during his next turn and claim first blood. I made the very stupid play mistake of deploying my warriors mostly out of cover in order to bubble wrap my vehicles against the scarabs... Only to have them die in droves from Gauss Blaster fire. I did manage to take out all of his fliers, and two units of immortals but since we were playing a mostly midfield game any casualties I inflicted were able to come back the next turn and take vengeance on whatever I had furthest forward. I am very dissapointed in the number of play mistakes I made on this mission. Kriston won rightfully and efficiently.

MVP Moment: Deploying my warriors early on was a fatal play mistake and one I am not going to be repeating. Also failing to kill the scarabs first turn allowed him to accelerate his path to victory just that little bit more.

Result: Decisive loss, WLD record: 12-8-2.

Overall I am very dissapointed in my performance at this tournament and even put off posting this update a couple days just so I could force myself to think about why I lost a little bit longer. My takeback from the event though is that I need to playtest more, I've been waaay too reckless with my wraithstar lately and it's been affecting my performance, I need to learn to throttle myself and not have them shoot out up front in order to get shot to shit early on. The fact that I have been playing a lot less is also problematic, its something I need to tend to. Look forward to game report 23 either thursday or friday, and then tournament report number 3 this weekend. It's going to be 1850 and I'm planning on bringing double wraithstar, I've yet to hammer down my list for sure but I've got a pretty solid start on it.

Today I got in another game against Ben, he's my go to guy if I want to fit in a quick game on a sunday. Before this game we were sitting at a 1-1-1 WLD ratio so this was the tie breaker since we've been tied up the middle. There is a 1250 point tournament coming up next week so we decided that today will be a practice game to test our lists for that tournament. Anyway stay tuned to see how it all turned out.
His list: Mechron Hybrid: Imotekh, Lord w/ orb, two units of warriors in arks, 3 tomb blades. Two Doom Scythes, 5 Deathmarks.

Mission: Relic, Dawn of War deployment

Highlights: The game started out pretty quickly, he got first turn and decided to play defensively, keeping his arks relatively back in order to keep me from double tapping him/ negating the benefit of nightfighting against him during my turn. I happily took the role of the aggressor and moved almost everything of mine forward and spreading out in preparation for the Doomscythes. I claimed first blood by taking out his tomb blades but did little else with shooting my first turn. Both of his scythes came in on turn 2 and he managed to take out both a ghost ark and an annihilation barge, as well as reducing another annihilation barge to 1 hp with his shooting. I downed one scythe in return and the wraiths moved up, the destroyer lord disconnecting in order to allow me to do extra damage in the assault. I managed to down one of the arks, allowing my wraiths to assault into imotekh's unit while the destroyer lord assaulted and took out the other ark. His turn three he used the deathmarks/ the other warrior squad to shoot down the destroyer lord. He managed to stand back up luckily, meanwhile the wraiths kept imotekh's unit well tied up although with little progress. Turn 3 saw me bringing down the other doomscythe, taking out the deathmarks with the Destroyer lord and dealing some minor damage to the open warrior unit. From there the game played out pretty quickly, with only his two warrior units left, one of which was tied up by the wraiths for the remainder of the game, the other picked away handily from the combined firepower of my annihilation barges and tesla immortals. The destroyer lord moved into combat to see if I couldn't dispatch Imotekh and table Ben. Since we knew the game was pretty much in the bag we decided to just keep playing out the Imotekh/ Destroyer lord fight to see if it could come to a head. We kept the fight going for another 8 rounds or so as Imotekh and the Destroyer lord kept killing eachother and then standing back up to fight for more. Eventually Imotekh took out both the D.Lord then the wraiths but that was about turn 9 or so.

MVP Moment: I took a risky move early on in the game when I charged into the deathmarks with my destroyer lord, he was down to one wound and was marked by the deathmarks so there was a pretty good chance they were gonna kill him. Ben made a point of making the roll very exciting even yelling "Dodge this!" as he rolled his overwatch (and systematically requesting that I mention this event in my report) The destroyer was forced to make a couple saves in the result but luckily none of them were rends and he managed to sweep the squad regardless. This made Ben very sad, which he also wanted me to mention in my report.

Result: Solid Victory, WLD record: 12-6-2.
VS Ben WLD: 2-1-1 (Still need another win in order to be able to claim true victory)

After the game we discussed Ben's list and concluded he needed to make a few tweaks in order to bring it up to reach its true potential. I look forward to facing him again in next weeks tournament. (Assuming we get paired up against eachother again)

There is a 1250pt tournament coming up next weekend at one of our local shops, Merlyns.

Why?

I really really like this list for a few reasons. First off we have the Wraithstar led by destroyer lord, this is my go to unit it works as a great counter-deathstar unit against enemies that go that route, otherwise it is a quite functional deathstar in an of itself, not to mention it can out maneuver most deathstars so more often that not its the unit getting the charge off. Next we have the Annihilation barges, they are the given in almost all of my Necron lists, the only time I ever really planning on playing less than three is if I want to bring Doomscythes, which won't be often. As for troops I have two units of 8 warriors in arks, arks of course needing a fairly large anti-tank commitment in order to get off the board more often than not. A finally rounding out the list is the unit of Tesla Immortals, these guys are fairly solid troops, nothing too flashy, they are here more to make sure that I have enough troops on the board than anything, they also work as fairly decent anti-air in a pinch.

I feel the strength of this list lies in the vehicles, 5 av13 vehicles with 5+ saves are tough for most lists at 1250, especially in my local metagame. Right now fliers are everywhere and most people have shifted their lists away from melta and missiles and more towards plasma and auto-cannons, which conveniently enough means the weapons I fear most have been traded out for weapons that most of the time I can ignore. But really what the list comes down to is a fairly points efficient machine that has only one really soft target (the immortals) which isn't really that soft. Even if my opponent manages to get the jump on me and take first turn I should be able to claim first blood just through the sheer toughness of my models. Mister Discohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10540359309103919442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1301120587891109031.post-22626937446825512732012-08-08T19:07:00.001-07:002012-08-08T19:07:27.436-07:00Game report 19: The Failed Experiment

Sunday I got a game in against Mekel, a local Eldar/ Chaos Marine player. He wanted to play a single detachment 2000 point game, so I decided to bring some toys to experiment with that I haven't brought recently just to see if perhaps I wrote them off too early. Namely I brought barge lords, doomsday arks, and scarabs. All of which I have tried previously and found to be not to my liking.

Mekel brought his thousand sons with Fateweaver support, this was bound to be an interesting game...

Opponent: Mekel Strahan

My list: Experimental Necrons: 2x Overlords in command Barges w/ warscythes. 10 Tesla Immortals led by a veiltek, stormtek. 10 Gauss immortals led by a veiltek. Two units of 10 immortals with two harbingers of the storm each. 2x Doomsday arks, annihilation barge. 5 Wraiths w/ 3 whipcoils. 10 Scarabs.

His list: Thousand Sons: I can't remember the specifics of this list as this game took place half a week ago but from memory: 2x Marine daemon prince of Tzeentch, w/ wings. 3 units of thousand sons in rhinos, 2 obliterators. Daemon allies: Fateweaver, horrors, Daemon prince of Tzeentch, wings.

Mission: The Emperor's will, Dawn of War deployment

Highlights: This game went horribly for me, he managed to take first turn and took down one of my doomsday arks first turn, claiming first blood. Fateweaver did mishap on his initial drop in and I placed him in the corner facing off the board so he had to glide in to start but overall it had little effect and he was able to get into the core of Mekel's army when it started to matter. The barge lords made decent harassment units but since they are so vulnerable to enemies swinging back at them I really am not completely sold on them over Destroyer lords at this time, although I do think I need to experiment with them a bit more to see. The scarabs ate a rhino and then got charged by the thousand sons, the sorceror dispatching them handily with his power maul. Mekel managed to take out the other Doomsday ark before any of his thousand sons were vulnerable to the large blast rendering both largely innefective. The rest of the game went with the wraiths tying up his warlord for 5 turns and him slowly moving in on my objective taking down a unit of troops at a time until finally I was just out of models to defend, The Daemon princes making quick work of anything they got into melee with. Eventually he completely overran my objective and he managed to win the game holding both objectives.

MVP Moment: Fateweaver rolled like a boss in this game, he did was he was supposed to and largely prevented me from being able to inflict any casualties on him and so he won the war of a attrition.

Result: Devastating Loss, WLD record: 11-6-2.

Overall my feelings about the units I normally don't bring have been reinforced by this game. I feel that Barge lords are too expensive for what they do. Especially when you compare them to Daemon chariots, you can get 4 and a half daemon chariots for the same price as a single necron chariot. I dislike doomsday arks because they are the second most fragile vehicle in the Necron codex (just behind the Triarch Stalker) and are completely immobile if you want them to have any real effect. They just crumble to lascannons/meltaguns. They did get better due to hammer and anvil deployment and random weapon destroyed results but still they just can't compete with Annihilation barges. Scarabs are probably the unit that I would most likely be interested in keeping from this experiment, they do a great job tarpitting most units especially since fists are in decline, although power mauls are their new bane since they strike before the scarabs, aren't unweildy, ignore armour, and cause instant death. Their use as an anti-vehicle unit is in decline mainly due to the flier heavy metagame I am seeing in this area. Honestly I think I would be better served by a second unit of wraiths than by a unit of scarabs but more playtesting is required.

Stay tuned, I am gonna try and get another game in tomorrow and play with a more serious list this time.

Today was the first official 6th edition tournament in our area. I started out the day great against my Necron rival, Ben, but after that everything started going downhill...

Game 16

Opponent: Ben Witt, Necron Kin

My list: Modified Mechron Hybrid: Dropped Harbinger of despair for a harbinger of the storm, and mindshackle on both the overlord and destroyer lord.

His list: Necron Air Superiority (same as my last game): 2x Overlord w/ mss, warscythe, phase shifter, orb. One leading a unit of 10 immortals in a nightscythe, the other leading a unit of 15 warriors on foot. 9 warriors in an ark w/ harbinger of storm. 10 Deathmarks in an nightscythe w/ harbinger of destruction, lord w/ orb, phase shifter. 2 Doomscythes

Mission: Big Guns Never Tire, Dawn of War Deployment

Highlights: This was game started off quick, My Destroyer Lord rolled the outflank warlord trait, so I kept the wraithstar in reserve to outflank. We had 5 objectives, one in mid and 2 in each of our deep left fields. We essentially deployed in opposite corners with no intention of moving in on eachother's primary forces. I went first and all of my reserves came in on turn 2. Both of my fliers immediately left combat airspace and my wraithstar outflanked right into his primary warrior blob on the ground. Early game the fighting took place in his back field with him bringing his deathmarks to help shut down the wraiths, and me bringing in my immortals and other warrior squad to take down the deathmarks. The wraiths easily took down his warrior squad and warlord, then his ghost ark, and finally the warrior squad inside the ark due to some bad dice luck on his side. Later game his fliers worked on harassing my deployment zone but I managed to pick them off one at a time. The game ended with me holding 2 objectives to his one, I killed 2 of his heavies and he killed one of mine. He did manage first blood but I got linebreaker and slay the warlord.

MVP Moment: I managed only minor wounds on his deathmark squad, but he failed his leadership and they ran off the board... Essentially Speeding up my progress towards victory by at least a whole turn... Which effectively clinched the game for me because it was relatively close up until the final turn.

Result: Victory, WLD record: 11-3-2.

Tournament WLD: 1-0-0

Game 17

Opponent: Jason Peterson, Imperial Bastard

His list: Imperial Skywatch: Jason went into this tournament correctly anticipating a heavy aircraft metagame. He brought: A company command squad, a huge blob platoon w/ at least 5 lascannons and all sorts of plasma and powerweapons and other ridiculousness. 3 Vendettas, 3 Hydras. And a Space wolves contingent including a Wolf Priest, a Wolf Lord, and a 5 man grey hunters squad. Also, the vendettas had dudes in them apparently. Oh and he had an aegis defense line w/ the autocannon upgrade.

Mission: Purge The Alien, Hammer and Anvil deployment

Highlights: This Game was interesting. Jason was one of our 'local' Regional 'Ard Boys champions and he even went to Nationals last year. He is one of the strongest players in the area and a bit of a rival of mine. I knew going in to this game that it was gonna be a tough match, my one advantage I had over him was that I was much more familiar with 6th edition than he. Unfortunately I have only a little bit of experience against Imperial guard and I always have the hardest time wrapping my head around their lists. It also doesnt help that every time I play against Jason, it's usually second or final round in a tournament where stakes are high and mistakes are capitalized upon, Also, I'm always quite sleep deprived when I play him... Which is par for the course, because I always work the graveyard shift before every tournament. Anyway things were bumpy for me from the get go, I failed every single Jink save I attempted this game and quickly lost all of my ground vehicles, meanwhile my fliers refused to come on until turn 4 and even when they came on they failed to even scratch a vendetta. I did manage to down one of the vendettas, killing all the guys inside except one, who promptly ran off the board... The Vendettas essentially had free reign to shred my side of the board with impunity. Meanwhile the wraithstar took major losses before they were able to get sunk into close combat. They did manage to take out one of hydras and the grey hunters before failing miserably when they charged the blob squad. He managed to pick me apart piece by piece as the game went on eventually claiming 13 victory points to my 7. Overall it was a great game against one of my favorite opponents who always gives me a run for my money. After the tournament he lent me his Codex so I can better learn his army.

MVP Moment: I had some bad luck with the wraithstar on turn two, when he managed to insta-gib two of my wraiths with lascannons and my destroyer lord failed his look out sirs resulting in him frying to ap2 weaponry. This severely weakened my wraithstar and resulted in them failing to do anything particularly spectacular when I needed them to.

Highlights: This is probably one of the most frustrating lists that a necron player can face, it is doubly so when said Necron player is exhausted and demoralized from an early tournament loss. The missin being relic made things even worse... The game began with the Wraithstar charging into Eldrad's unit... Failing miserably and being summarily wiped out. After that I spent the entire rest of the game attempting to kite the wraithguard units and unloading on them with ungodly amounts of fire power (Roughly 600 shots over the course of the game) And only managing to kill 4-5 wraithguards. (2+ re-rollable cover save on a toughness 6 unit is kinda good apparently) He Managed to claim the relic early and I had no way of getting it off of him due to him taking down my overlord early.

After 15 games of playtesting I think its time to shift my thinking a bit. With the advent of 6th I was very firm in my belief that royal courts were a point sink and that I would benefit more from having more bodies on the table then I would from having a few expensive units with better guns. But I'm starting to see how having that little extra oomph in the units might actually go a ways towards increasing the combat effectiveness in my army. So with my experience over the past couple weeks and some insight from the interwebs I've developed a new list. Check it out after the jump.

Why?

The most apparent thing you might notice when reading over this list compared to my previous lists is that I dropped chaos contingent altogether. I think I was just overly attached with the idea of having lash to help keep my opponents under control. As it turned out, its a lot harder to get lash off these days, and besides I already have plenty of tough to kill models for holding objectives so the plague marines weren't really needed, although the plasma was nice. So with an extra 355 points to spend I was able to greatly improve my core army.

Lets get the easy things out of the way, the wraiths and Annihilation barges are auto-include for me. Annihilation barges are one of the best land to air weapons platforms in the game and are tough as nails and great for taking down vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Wraiths are also essential for this list since they are amazing counter assault/ tarpit units. They also steamroll non assault units in close combat. This leads me to the Destroyer lord, he does a fantastic job of being a bullet magnet, wound dispenser for the wraiths and vastly increase their survivability until they get into combat. Once there the boost that preferred enemy provides cannot be denied, so he definitely earns his spot in my list. I did drop mindshackle from him though, while it is nice, the list was a little tight on points and something had to give... And since it only works half the time anyway, I felt thats where the points were gonna have to give. Next up we have the overlord, while Obyron's ghost mantle is amazing and his cleaving counterblow can be devastating, he's just too fragile in close combat and he's too vulnerable to ap2 weaponry. So I traded him out for a basic overlord with phase shifter in order to add a little resilience for challenges. This also unlocks the royal court for me which also gives me a little bit more list building flexibility. As for troops I went with 4 selections due to the objective heavy nature of 6th. The two units of warriors in arks will each be led by harbingers of the storm, these units are just for sitting on objectives and shooting anything that comes near, the harbingers of the storm give them a little oomph for anti tank and anti air in particular, which is something that is desperately needed since 3 other tournament players in the area are going to be running very flier heavy lists. The other warrior squad is my flexibility unit, I can either deploy them in order to castle up against an assault heavy army or I can have them come in via nightscythe in order to provide some forward offense against a castling army. Either way they get a harbinger of Despair with veil in order to provide mobility and late game objective claiming ability. Finally we have the immortal squad with tesla weaponry, they will be my forward objective claiming unit and the overlord will attach to them. They will more often than not come in via nightscythe and insert wherever needed.Mister Discohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10540359309103919442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1301120587891109031.post-53987709053709007532012-07-23T04:33:00.001-07:002012-07-23T04:33:15.860-07:00Game Report 15: Why, Brother?

Today I got a rematch in against Ben's Necrons. He played with the numbers of his list a bit since last we played and he has gotten it to be very solid. We also talked last game about his play mistakes and he made sure to rectify them masterfully. What follows is record of my most complete defeat since 6th edition...
His list: Necron Air Superiority: 2x Overlord w/ mss, warscythe, phase shifter, orb.

Mission: The Scouring, Dawn of War deployment

Highlights: Ben was well prepared for this game, and he went into it with a definitive gameplan. He deployed only the warriors on foot and the warriors in the ark to start and despite my best efforts I was unable to take them down through the first couple turns. Both doom scythes and one of his nightscythes came in on turn 2, dropping in the deathmarks right on top of my wraiths and using the doomscythes to take out one my my arks and one of my Annihilation barges. The Death mark squad with help from the harbinger of despair absolutely annihilated the wraith squad too. From there it was all down hill and I was on my back foot, I only managed to take down one of the Doomscythes before losing the rest of my annihilation barges and I was unable to even glance with massed warrior fire. From that point on it was a simple numbers game, he outnumbered me by enough of a margin that I was taking casualties twice as fast as him, it was no contest. The game ended naturally on turn 6, my only model left on the board was a single plague marine and he still had at least half his army and all but one of his fliers.

MVP Moment: On my turn 3, I disconnected Obyron from the warrior squad with the intention of assaulting the deathmark squad which was down to just 7 or 8 models, having lost the harbinger of despair but retaining the lord. He should have been able to charge into them, taking maybe one or two wounds at most from overwatch before slaughtering them due to charging through cover and being initiative 1 and getting a bazillion swings from cleaving counterblow.... Somehow the Deathmarks managed to achieve 2 rends and 2 wounds with overwatched and shot him dead before he even made it into combat. This gave him a powerful unit in double tapping range of my entire army which allowed him to seal victory handily. The Deathmarks were definitely the all stars of the game.

Result: Devastating Loss, WLD record: 10-3-2.
It was clear on turn 5 that I had lost the game but I was bound and determined to not let him table me, by some minor miracle my solo plague marine managed to survive an overlord beating on him with a warscythe, I was so proud of him, he stuck it out to the end.

Really this game was eye opening to me, I thought I was sitting in a pretty good position when it came to anti-air, I realize now that I'm a lot more vulnerable then I thought... After playing around with some numbers thinking about ways to include anti air, I've considered everything from lootas to storm ravens I'm begining to think that my best bet may to be just to fight fire with fire and acquire a couple nightscythes myself in order to help keep the flyers at bay... because really, what's better anti-air then a nightscythe... Especially at 100 points. Anyway stay tuned, I think it's time I finally give up on the Chaos contingent and so I've been working on a new list... Keep an eye out for that update.

Oh and Ben, since I know your reading this, Thank you very much for the great game! These last couple losses have really helped me see where my weaknesses are and what I need to do to shore up my list. I look forward to the inevitable rematch this weekend at the tournament.

It was looking like I wasn't going to be able to get a game in today, until at the last minute I convinced one of the owner's of my local game store, Bryan, that he should play me a game. His list: Space wolves w/ wolfstar. I don't know the Space Wolves codex super well so I honestly can't be too specific on the list. But from what I remember he was running: A Th/SS wolf lord on wolf. A rune priest on bike w/ misfortune, precognition. The Space wolf equivalent to a chaplain on bike. Assorted Thunderwolves, forming a deathstar with the characters. 3 units of grey hunters in rhinos, two missile spam long fang squads.

Mission: The Relic, Hammer and Anvil deployment.

Highlights: Bryan was my opponent for game 9, and he has been following my exploits a fair bit since 6th dropped. He knew full well what he was walking into when we rolled up against eachother and he was prepared. He claimed first turn, threw precognition on his rune priest and ran the Wolfstar right up the middle to cover the relic. He rolled the warlord trait that creates a 12" bubble of move through cover on his wolf lord which allowed him to move two of his rhinos up to flank the wolfstar essentially forcing me to remain in his front arc and have to wound against the 2+ save rune priest (who was re-rolling due to precognition). I made a very major play mistake on my first turn by using the wraiths to attempt to surround one of the rhinos and trap the guys inside instead of intercepting the wolfstar as they should have. I managed to do very little damage to the wolfstar with shooting (as expected) but I took out the rhino on my right flank and killed a couple of the marines inside with my plague marines. The wraiths wiffed their charge roll and left a gap for the grey hunters to deploy safely out to after they shredded the rhino. Then tragedy struck. The wolfstar bypassed my front line and went straight for my ghost arks, taking both out in a single multi-assault, taking out two warriors in the explosion. The rune priest cast misfortune on the wraith star then lit it up, taking out three of them with subsequent shooting from the grey hunters that were in the rhino the wraiths blew up as well as the long fangs. The grey hunters on my right flank charged into my plague marines and were tied up for the remainder of the game. In my turn two I tried bringing down the wolfstar with shooting but only managed to kill a couple, but I did happen to take down the rune priest. With only three thunderwolves and the wolf lord left I charged into them with my D. lord and two wraiths in the hope of tying them up and saving my warriors... But Misfortune did it's job and he managed to dispatch the remainder of the wraithstar in a single round of combat without a single casualty of his own. The wolf lord split off from the thunderwolves and took out a unit of warriors, the thunderwolves charged the other warriors and wiped them out as well, they eventually fell to annihilation barge fire while the wolf lord joined the combat with the plague marines. Obyron and his squad split ways as well, the warriors lit up the grey hunters that the wraiths left behind while Obyron moved over to take the other 10 man squad on solo. Obyron took out 8 of the grey hunters in the first round of combat due to cleaving counterblow and finished off the rest in the second before moving on and taking out all the grey hunters that were locked in with the warriors. The game ended with his squad running as fast as possible to grab the objective that up until this point had remained completely untouched unfortunately the game ended on turn 5 before I was able to pick it up, Bryan had line breaker and slay the warlord to my first blood, his win.

MVP Moment: There were two pretty epic moments this game, the first was a very decisive one, losing my wraiths in a single round of combat instead of tying up the wolf star for at least a turn went a long way towards keeping me from being able to take the objective. The most bad ass moment by far however was when Obyron dodged and weaved, surviving 30+ attacks from the grey hunters without taking a single wound, then in a single bloody swing of his scythe he cut down 8 marines forcing the survivors to retreat and then catching them as they ran preventing them from being able to shoot him down in Bryan's turn.

Result: Loss, WLD record: 10-2-2.

This was an epic game, and it gave me a lot of respect for the new psychic powers fersure. Misfortune is a great tool for taking down deathstars, and precognition is also amazing for a tanking caster as well. I love the new cinematic style to the new rules and for the first time ever since I've started playing 40k Im actually thinking about how the battles are playing, I can actually envision Obyron going all jedi, deflecting blows and waiting for the perfect moment to just level the marines around him and its going a long way towards making me want to play more and more 40k to see what other crazy situations come up. I am absolutely in love with 6th edition!

Today I faced off once again against Caleb and his beautiful Daemon army. Caleb's primary focus is as a hobby player and as such usually brings slightly fluffier lists with all the trimmings such as units in holy numbers wherever possible. I usually have a ton of fun playing against him and he often makes pretty ballsy moves that definitely ramp up the fun factor and when they succeed they often put me in a pretty tight spot. Anyway here's the report for you:
A terminator lord w/ mark of nurgle, chainfist. Havocs w/ Icon of Nurgle, 3 assault cannons, 1 lascannon. Plague Marines w/ plasma & flamer

Mission: The Scouring, Hammer and Anvil deployment.

Highlights: The mission was in my favor on this one. I had both of the three vp objectives and one of the 2vp objectives in my deployment zone, while he had the 4 and 1 deep in his and the other 2vp one was roughly midfield. This allowed me to castle further back and forced him to come to me. His havocs and plague marines deployed by his objectives. about 36" away from my forces and they camped there for the entire game, allowing me to control pretty well what they were able to shoot at. He ended up rolling his unfavored half for his Daemon wave: One Daemon prince of nurgle, the bloodcrushers and one unit of plaguebearers. The plaguebearers deep struck in to claim the 1vp objective and the bloodcrushers and Daemon prince deployed midfield. I pushed the blood crushers back with lash so I only had to deal with the daemon prince this turn and managed to torrent him down handily. The rest of his army came in turn 2, the other prince and bloodthirster dropping in behind my lines and the flamers landing right next to the wraiths in position to get 10 flamer hits or so. One wraith fell to the flamers and the D. lord managed to fail a Look out Sir! roll dropping him down a wound. On my next turn the wraiths charged in to the flamers, wiping them easily but resulting in another lost wound on the D. lord due to overwatch. I I also was able to torrent down the bloodthirster and take out most of the Daemon Prince's wounds while lashing him into position where if he continued to swoop he would have to fly off the board forcing him to have to glide in and leaving him only the plague marines in charge range. The next turn the bloodcrushers made it into the wraiths, while the Prince charged my plague marines... Dying to plasma overwatch. From here on I was on cleanup duty, the wraiths slowly chipped away at bloodcrushers before moving on to claim the middle objective and seal victory.

MVP Moment: Managing to take down the Daemon prince with plasma overwatch was a decisive moment in the game, if I hadnt I probably would have lost the plague marine squad quickly and the prince would have been able to wreak havoc on my back lines from there.

Result: Win, WLD record: 10-1-2.

So today I figure it's time for me to introduce a new kind of article I'll be bringing to MSS going forward. From time to time I'm going to bring forward a new list or idea I want to try out, when I do so I will be posting an article with the list and a brief description of each unit and it's purpose. Going forward as I post game reports, instead of giving a simple summary or having to reference lists from previous battle reports I will simply provide a link to the list in question then detail any changes from the list provided in the link. This will allow for me to provide more information on any game report without bogging any readers down in minutia they may already know of/ don't care about.

Strategy:

This is my go to tournament list for the time being. Obyron attaches to the 15 warriors who are on foot, Destroyer Lord (who is the warlord) attaches to the wraiths, and the Sorceror attaches to the plague marines. The basic idea is to castle up in my deployment zone trying to spread out as much as possible on to whatever objectives I have. I try and leave my Warrior blob somewhere relatively 'careless' with many models sitting outside of cover in order to tempt my opponent into shooting at them instead of my other units. Between reanimation protocols and the ghost arks the idea is to encourage my opponent to waste anti infantry fire that they could be using to deal take care of more dangerous units. The wraithstar's has a number of potential roles depending on my opponent's army. If the enemy has brought a deathstar of their own the wraiths move out to intercept it and tie it up for the entire game, if the enemy is also castling the wraithstar moves forward to disrupt their line. Otherwise they act as a distraction unit/ countercharge unit as needed. The chaos contingent is here because the list has an inherent weakness against other armies that are castling up and making use of 2+ cover saves. Their job also changes depending on the enemies army. Against an in your face all assault army they are there to stagger the enemy forces hopefully making it so I only have to deal with one enemy in my face at a time. Really they are just a problem solver unit, the plasma also patches up a weakness against monstrous creatures that I seem to have. The annihilation barges are here because they are amazing and are a bit of a swiss army knife unit, they are amazing anti-air and can take down anything short of a landraider (which my wraithstar/ rest of my army can handle with ease). Finally the ghost arks are here to provide a mobile platform for my warriors to fire from as well as late game mobility if I have to spread out to claim objectives. They usually sit in the back and repair any casualties the warrior blob may incur. Mid-Late game Obyron's unit eventually veils out to go contest/ claim enemy objectives or wreak havoc as necessary.

Why the Change?

This is very similar to my list from before but with a few minor but important changes. Before the chaos contingent was a Daemon prince with lash and wings, and the plague marine squad, which was only 5 strong and had a champion w/ fist and combi-plas. The Prince was consistently being shot down early and rarely being able to get lash off because of it, which is problematic because lash is much more important late game when it comes time to fight for objectives. Meanwhile the champ was often turned into a chump due to being challenged in combat against high initiative ap3+ weaponry, so he often didn't even get to use his fist. Finally, the plague marines were relatively easy kill points due to being only 5 strong. So I dropped the champ and prince and replaced them with three more plague marines to make the unit more survivable and a terminator sorceror. By attaching the sorceror to the squad and placing him up front I will be able to move incoming shots to the unit in a way to make both units much much more survivable and thus more useful. The sorceror can eat incoming bolter fire with his 2+ save, while incoming plasma shots and the like can be thrown back on to a plague marine who is in cover giving me a 4+/5+ cover save and a 5+ feel no pain instead of the 5+ cover I would otherwise get. Not to mention the plague marine squad grants the sorcerer fearless, and defensive grenades, which is never a bad thing.

Today I finally played against Necrons.

My list: No Court Mechrons, W/ Chaos support: My go to list, no changes for this game.

His list: Flying Toasters: Necron lord w/ Scythe, orb, phase shifter, MSS leading 15 warriors on foot. 5 Tomb blades w/ Tesla Carbines. 10 Deathmarks lead by a lord w/ staff of light, orb, phase shifter. 2 Doom Scythes. 2 units of 14 warriors led by lords w/ scythes, orbs, and phase shifters in Night Scythes.

Mission: The Emperor's will, Dawn of War deployment.

Highlights: It was interesting playing a necron player who had almost the exact opposite army then I play. I will admit that I suddenly have a lot more respect for the power of a phase shifter, after he shot down my wraiths there was no real safe target for my destroyer lord to assault. Ultimately he ended up tying up the 15 man warrior blob led by the overlord for the latter half of the game despite the incredible likelihood of his death due to the overlord challenging him with 3 re-rolls. Once again the Daemon prince failed to do anything of note... which is leading me to think that it might be worth dropping the Chaos contingent all together. Both of his doom scythes and one night scythe came in on turn 2, but failed to do any real lasting damage of note, I planned ahead and spread out my models to minimize any potential damage, but grouped up my wraiths in order to make them a tempting target in order to bait the doom scythes into going after them... Which payed off brilliantly allowing my Annihilation barges to shoot both of the doom scythes out of the sky handily. the nightscythe survived a little longer allowing it to drop it's payload right by my objective and for the warriors inside to take out one of my arks before I finally disabled the scythe. It took me a couple painful turns to finally remove the warriors in my deployment zone before I could finally push into his... The second night scythe came in and dropped another block of warriors between his objective and mine so I had to fight through them too before I could get to his home base. Unfortunately it proved just enough and he stalled me long enough that I couldn't get to it before the close of turn 5, and the game ended. He got 4 vps for his objective and first blood, where I got 4 for linebreaker and my objective. The game ended in a tie. If the game had continued I would have overwhelmed his objective with shear numbers.

MVP Moment: There is something incredibly amusing about a destroyer lord and an overlord continuously mindshackling eachother... that was the only thing that really saved my destroyer lord though, if he had been luckier and rolled more than 1 or 2 attacks when he mindshackled me I would have lost the game.

Result: Tie, WLD record: 9-1-2, Winning Streak broken at 9.

Tomorrow I am going to attempt to get a rematch with Ben, he's gonna add more fliers to his list and I'm gonna try dropping my chaos contingent... It should certainly be interesting, stay tuned!

Today I offered Kriston (from games 10 and 3) a rematch since yesterday's game went so one sided. He decided to bring his tyranids instead of his Grey Knights or Dark Eldar. Which is great for me because my list doesn't have a good answer for monstrous creature spam so I need to get some games in and prepare. And so it began...

Opponent: Kriston Broxson, playing Tyranids

My list: No Court Mechrons, W/ Chaos support: My go to list, no changes for this game

His list: The buggening: 2 Flying Tyrants, both with biomancy. 2 Tervigons w/ all the trimmings. A Tyrannofex w/ the big gun. 4 Hive guard, 2 venomthropes, two 20 man gargoyle squads, two 10 man gaunt squads, 5 Raveners.

Mission: The Scouring, Vanguard Strike deployment.

Highlights: Kriston had first turn and deployed in a relatively aggressive formation, which was good because I ended up with the 4vp, one 3vp and one 2vp objectives in my deployment zone and he needed to overwhelm my lines to win. I deployed all my vehicles at least 31" away from hive guard and most in cover from the Tfex to minimize his first turn shooting. I also deployed the wraithwing and Daemon prince on my far right flank in order to take advantage of his flyrants both being on the opposite flank. He did the typical push forward that tyranids are known for and flew his tyrants right up in face in order to draw fire... Which they did. Once again his dice were against him and I managed to take out both flyrants turn one as well as the majority of the gargoyles on the left flank. Meanwhile the lash prince attempted to push back the raveners but failed miserably and the Wraiths managed to fail their 5" charge into the gargoyles, leaving me vulnerable on my right.

The raveners made it into my plague marines and dealt some damage. He tried capitalizing on my failed charge but didn't really manage to do any substantial damage to the wraiths before he charged into them with the gargoyles... Unfortunately for him my dice were hot with the wraith attacks and I managed to take out most of the unit. He ended up overwhelming my core from the left flank/ mid and things were looking dire... Until I managed to finally take down his Tervigon which ended up killing many gaunts and collapsing his Synapse network. The game ended with me controlling 6 objective vps, 3 vps from wiping out his fast attacks and 2vps from slay the warlord and first blood. He had 4 objective vps and 1vp from killing the wraiths.

MVP Moment: Managing to take out both Flyrants turn one was huge for me, if either had survived I'm almost completely sure I would have lost the game. I realize, my list is very vulnerable to high initiative monstrous creatures, this is something I need to consider remedying.

Result: Hard Fought Victory, WLD record: 9-1-1, 9 game winning streak.

Tomorrow I will be getting another game in, it will either be against Kriston's Salamanders or Ben's Necrons. Either game should be very exciting. Stay tuned, and thanks for reading!
